Anthrocon has announced Gray Paws Sanctuary as its designated charity for the upcoming 2024 Pittsburgh furry convention. The White Oak nonprofit, which specializes in the care of senior dogs, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
Darla Poole Brescia, co-founder of Gray Paws, expressed her gratitude, stating, “This is amazing to be selected as the charity for 2024.” The sanctuary not only provides a permanent home for older dogs but also offers foster care options and financial assistance for their medical needs. Currently, eight dogs reside at the sanctuary, located in the Brescia household.
Brescia, who also serves as the chief operations officer for the McKeesport-based nonprofit Auberle, shared details about Gray Paws’ initiatives during a news conference at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. The sanctuary operates a “forever foster care” program, working with humane rescues and veterinary clinics to find homes for senior dogs, with over 100 dogs receiving financial support for veterinary care throughout their lives.
Additionally, the sanctuary has launched the Love Your Animal for Life (LOYAL) program, which aids around 40 families in maintaining ownership of their senior dogs. Anthrocon, set to run from Thursday through Sunday, is anticipated to draw over 15,000 attendees from around the globe, celebrating the furry fandom where participants dress as anthropomorphic animal characters.
