PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Anthrocon, the annual convention dedicated to furry fandom, set a new fundraising record over the weekend, raising an impressive $100,000 for local charity. This year, the event partnered with Gray Paws Sanctuary, a nonprofit focused on rescuing senior dogs, particularly those aged 10 to 12 years, who are at risk of euthanasia due to age or veterinary costs.
Darla Poole Brescia from Gray Paws expressed her excitement upon learning about the partnership, which was established back in December. She highlighted that the funds raised would be transformative for their operations, allowing them to double the number of dogs they can save this year. The fundraising was driven by a series of engaging events and charity auctions, with participants displaying immense generosity. Brescia recounted an emotional moment when attendees rapidly contributed an additional $10,000 in just 10 minutes to surpass the initial goal.
Anthrocon’s commitment to supporting smaller rescues has made a significant impact on local animal welfare, and Brescia praised both the organizers and attendees for their kindness and generosity, dispelling any misconceptions about the furry community.
